What is a PPA?
A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a contractual arrangement between a business owner and a solar services provider. The business owner pays for the electricity consumed at a fixed rate. This agreed-upon tariff typically experiences a fixed annual escalation, enabling businesses to reliably forecast their future energy expenses.
What is a IPP?
An Independent Power Producer (IPP) is an organization that operates power generation facilities independently from public electricity utilities like Eskom. IPPs are involved in the ownership and operation of power generation assets with the purpose of selling electricity to utilities, central government buyers, or end user. IPPs play a diverse role in the energy sector, contributing to both grid-connected power supply and decentralized energy generation.
What is BESS?
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) refers to a technology that stores electrical energy in the form of chemical energy within batteries for later use. BESS is designed to store excess electricity generated during periods of low demand or high renewable energy production and discharge it when demand is high or renewable energy supply is limited. This allows for better integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the electrical grid, balancing supply and demand fluctuations, enhancing grid stability, and providing backup power during outages.
What is photovoltaic (PV) energy?
Renewable solar energy is clean electrical energy produced using solar panels that convert part of the solar energy into electrical energy; it is a renewable energy, non-polluting in the operating phase and silent.
What is load shedding?
Load shedding refers to a controlled and temporary electricity outage that occurs when the demand for electricity surpasses the available supply. It is a measure implemented by Eskom to prevent widespread power failures or blackouts during times of high energy demand. Load shedding helps to balance the electricity grid and maintain its stability. It is implemented through scheduled power cuts, where certain areas or sectors are intentionally disconnected from the power supply for a specific duration. This proactive approach helps manage the strain on the power infrastructure and ensures the efficient distribution of electricity resources during peak periods.
